Taking a Breath
Well, I am finally catching up from the last week. Since even when a loved one is no longer with you, life goes on, there were still many things to be done. Many events had been planned for last weekend prior to my grandma going into hospice, so I didn’t go home until Sunday night, after those events.
There was kickball on Thursday, in which we had a close game but ultimately emerged still undefeated (in fact, tonight we play the only other still undefeated team. Yikes!), then on Friday night there was the mid-season kickball party.
On Saturday evening I had a birthday party to attend, where I got to see a bunch of people that I haven’t really had time to hang out with since late summer, so that was quite nice. I also baked some chocolate chip cookies as my contribution to the occasion, which seemed to go over quite well. We still had a few extra to take home and consume, so that was good.
On Sunday I attended a poker night. After losing my initial $10, I had to rebuy in for another $10, where I was then able to regain $6 of my losses, meaning overall I only lost $4. Not bad for a few hours’ entertainment. After that, I had a quick drive to Whittier, getting there around 10:45pm.
Monday evening was my Grandma’s memorial service and viewing. There were lots of people in attendance, and of course many tears were shed. My sister and I were some of the people who went up to say a few things—we wanted to provide the perspective of having seen her quite often while growing up. My cousin’s husband also went up, which was nice, because he provided the perspective of seeing her with his kids weekly in recent years.
Tuesday was the funeral, which was a quicker affair than I anticipated, and was then followed by gathering at my sister’s house, which of course was my grandma’s old house, and thus a fitting location. It’s still hard to believe that she’s really gone—and that it’s already been a week.
