Considering the Switch
Since my site isn’t hugely popular or anything, many of you probably didn’t even notice that it was down yesterday morning. It seems that spammers decided to totally hammer the MT trackback and search scripts, which of course strained the server; the end result being that my site was temporarily suspended until I promised to either disable the offending scripts, find a way to secure them, or switch to a less server-intensive blogging platform like Wordpress.
The Perl/CGI combo hits the servers harder than the PHP solution, though I’m pretty sure that at some point in the past my test install of WP got me in this sort of trouble too. I don’t think you can really win if the spammers decide they really want to use your site for evil. At any rate, I’m first going to search to see if I can find a way to secure the scripts and possibly get something like mod_perl to work on this shared hosting. I still like MT better for the things I use it for, and I spent so much time customizing it. With my current job and all the things I like to do in my spare time, it’s just so daunting to think about trying to customize an install of WP to get it to do everything I want.
Of course, I got it really close last time I tried, and WP has come a long way since then. If I feel motivated enough, I may try and see what happens. I need to figure out something though, because they say that if this happens again they will terminate my account. I just wish it wasn’t all so time-consuming. :(

Oh man that sucks 8( Definitely try to get mod_perl working, that should help a lot. CGI is pretty brutal.
Otherwise, you can always ask me for PHP help. 8) You know how to get ahold of me.
1 | Posted by: cephyn on March 03, 2007 @ 11:28 AMYea, I submitted a ticket to the web host asking if they can set it up for me. (Since it’s shared hosting, I don’t exactly have access to make changes to the config file) I’m hoping that will help enough.
Damn spammers!
2 | Posted by: JenniferIt’s because of problems like these that my friend Michiel decided to build a blog-program for Sofie and me.
I’m very happy with it :) especially since I can easily request new features :)

You’re just saying yay WP cuz it’s PHP! Where’s your WP blog? ;)
5 | Posted by: JenniferI did notice it was down yesterday!!! But I assumed you were working on it or something. Damn the spammers anyway. They just ruin it for everyone else. LOL. Glad you’ve got things working again!
6 | Posted by: Jessica on March 03, 2007 @ 7:37 PMLooks like we both might be making the jump to WP. The amount of spam I have been getting recently is double what is was a month a go. Thankfully they have yet to bring my site down(knock on wood) but I’m not going to be surprised if it happens soon.
Goodluck, I hope the change is quick and easy for you (an me :p)!
