Crafty Costume

On Saturday night I went out with Jenn, a friend of Jenn’s, and that girl’s boyfriend. We all dressed up and headed to Q’s.

My costume complimented Jenn’s—we were both characters from the movie, The Craft. She was the scary, crazy chick, and I was the nice, not-as-goth new girl. So basically, my costume didn’t look AS costumey as hers. I had on a turtle-neck, a grey hoodie, a Catholic schoolgirl skirt, and black thigh-high stockings and black loafers. Oh, and some slightly darker than normal lipstick.

Jenn’s costume was crazy though, consisting of this long jacket, a corset, dress, thigh-high stockings, knee-high stiletto boots, and a bunch of necklaces.

We got a pretty late start, not getting to the club until around 11pm. They were playing some weird music—not Halloween-themed, and not their normal mix either. Strange. It seemed pretty crowded on the dance floor, probably at least in part due to the size of some people’s costumes. So, we went to the 2nd floor and hung out in the little VIP area instead.

After the place closed, we all headed to Steve’s apartment for a little afterparty that was mainly just hanging out and talking. I’m not really sure how long we all stayed up—I didn’t look at a clock, and the time change was happening anyway.

Yesterday was a pretty lazy day, but it sounds like we may reprise our costumes on Tuesday for Halloween night.

Double Sneeze

A little while ago I just experienced something completely bizarre; something I have never before experienced.

I sneezed. Ok, that’s not the weird part. What made this sneeze unique is that I sneezed twice at the same time—a sneeze within a sneeze, if you will.

It wasn’t one sneeze after another. It was a sneeze, and while the A-CHOO from that sneeze was coming out, somewhere in the “CH” part I believe, I sneezed again.

So, I guess it was something like “A-CH-A-CHOO-CHOO”, only really fast, and all blurred together, instead of said separately. Unfortunately, no one is around to hear me and back me up on this, so I guess you’ll just have to take my word for it that it did indeed happen as I say.

Has this sort of thing happened to you or anyone you know?

Everyone Loves to Win

Yesterday was a good day, overall. I got a bunch of work done for my company, and then, while checking the local site, Edhat, I saw that I have once again won a free t-shirt in their daily contest. Hurrah!

I can now own a shirt in BOTH colors! I also still have the tank top I won the first time around. I’m glad I picked the tank top back then, because it would seem they only make the regular shirts nowadays. So that makes me special!

Later on in the evening I watched Love Actually with Steve. I’d only seen it once before, back when it first came out. I forgot how much I liked that movie. I also forgot how tear-inducing it is—both with the sad AND happy parts! What’s really neat though, is while doing some imdb surfing on it, I found the trivia that the random happy reunion scenes at the airport were all real. They just filmed at Heathrow and anytime they got a good shot, they asked permission to use it. I thought that was cool.

Anyway, back to work!

Early Birthday at the Bellagio

My birthday is still 2 weeks away, but Steve’s company is supposed to send him to Paris that weekend, so we celebrated a little early by going to Vegas over the weekend. In honor of my birthday we decided to not stay at our usual hotels and instead got a room at the Bellagio, woohoo!

Neither one of us had stayed there before, so it was cool. They had the separate shower and tub thing, a night-time turn down service, bath robes, and some really comfortable beds. I know Steve was happy because the beds come with like 700 pillows—I’m a one pillow kind of sleeper, but he likes lots and lots of pillows.

So we played some cards, walked around the garden, saw the water show, and took some touristy pictures around town. I really should’ve used the opportunity to take random street shots of strangers, but I chickened out. One amusing photo might have been of this one homeless guy who had a sign that said “I won’t lie. I want beer” and he had a few cans sitting next to him, so perhaps someone had already obliged him.

At any rate, I had a nice time—Steve also bought me a cute shirt when we decided to stop at State Line to avoid some post-accident traffic we heard about.

In 2 weeks I’ll be 27. Yikes!

Self-portrait of me in the bathroom of my hotel room.

Bellagio bed. Note the presence of more than 2 flat pillows. I believe there are at least 7 in this picture.

Can’t really tell, but this is the Bellagio garden. Posted mainly just because I’m dressed up, in case sometime in the future I wonder what I looked like for my birthday.

Wasp Invasion

They’re BAAAAAAAAAACK.

The few run-ins I had with wasps last summer apparenly weren’t my last. They have apparently found some sort of way in through the window RIGHT BEHIND MY HEAD and now for the last few days I’ve had wasps come in almost every day during the afternoon (usually between noon and 4 I’d say).

It started with just one, so I thought it was a fluke, but then yesterday two came in, so I finally called my landlord since the problem obviously isn’t getting better.

Right now I think at least two just came in, but it’s hard to say because I was on the phone with a client when I spotted one, so I was trying to kill it with a shoe while saying “uh huh” at all the right places on the phone. Thus, I’m not sure I killed it, and the one I saw minutes later could’ve been that one coming back to seek revenge.

I called the pest company to see when they were expected to arrive. They told me 3 - 3:30pm. That’s a LOOONG time to keep staring at my window, listening for the faint buzzing sound that means another one has broken through. I’d leave, to escape the insanity, but I fear that if I do, I will be greeted with dozens of them, since I would not be around to kill them as they entered one by one.

I feel like a crazy person. Every moving shadow, every rustling, any slight sound, has me worried that I will have to kill again. I just hope I really did get all of the ones I saw.

Why did they suddenly decide that my window would be a good place to be?? On the good side, I am apparently not the only person worried about this—when I called the pest people, they said I was the 3rd call about this job today. So maybe I’m not the only one being attacked.

I do hope that this is the last day I have to keep looking over my shoulder while I try to work.

Feeling Numb

Ok, this is really annoying. Ever since waking up after going downtown in somewhat bad shoes Saturday night, my big toe on my left foot has been feeling numb.

I’m thinking I probably just pinched some sort of nerve or something, putting pressure at an odd angle for several hours. It just feels odd though—especially if fabric rubs across it. It’s kinda creepy, actually.

I dunno, I guess it’ll probably sort itself out eventually, but I hope it’s soon. I’d really hate to be known as the girl with 9 toes—not to mention it would make it REALLY hard to wear flip flops.

Party By Night, Photography By Day

Last night I met up with Jenn and a friend of hers from out of town. We started out at the Press Room (which she amusingly had a hard time finding, despite its close proximity to where we first met and where she parked her car.) and had a drink there. We looked inside a few places, like Indochine, but it was still a bit early (like 10-something) so most places seemed pretty dead.

We then went to Madison’s and had a drink there before heading to Q’s for some dancing. I knew Steve was out with some of his basketball buddies, so I just gave him a quick call to let him know that was where my group was headed if he was interested. He did decide to move his posse over there as well, so I met up with him.

Best part is that I only had to pay for 1 drink out of 4 since Jenn bought me one, and then her friend insisted on buying us the other drinks, so that was cool. We stayed until they shut the place down for the night.

This morning I had a slight headache, which I was worried about since I promised Marika we’d go take pictures. Luckily, by the time we went to the Natural History Museum at 1:30pm, I felt normal. Overall the pictures I took today weren’t terribly impressive, but there were a couple that I actually like, so perhaps I will post them soon. I’m guessing Marika took way more pictures than me so I’m sure she has a lot more to work with. I really need to just take pictures of stuff and not think too much—otherwise I only wind up taking very few pictures.

Blah, I can’t believe tomorrow is already Monday again.

New Windshield

Hooray, only like 2 months after the fact, I FINALLY have all the repair work done on my car. This mornng the windshield guy came to my apartment (yay for mobile service!) and brought my brand-new OEM windshield. Of course, if I wasn’t stubborn in wanting the OEM glass I could’ve had this done weeks ago, but no matter.

Now I don’t have to drive around looking all ghetto with a cracked windshield. Luckily I am not going anywhere during the day or anything, since you apparently have to let the car sit for a few hours so that the glue dries properly. I wouldn’t want the windshield to fall off!

Anyway, so glad it’s finally done with. :)

Halloween Costume: An Update

I picked up a halloween costume cheaply last night from someone selling it online (they decided to be something else instead). It’s cute, but I am pondering now if that is what I will actually go as.

It’s a Snow White Outfit, only it’s WAAAAY shorter than the dress you see in the animated film. In fact, I will probably have to walk back and forth in it to see if it gets any shorter with movement (it’s all spandexy and stuff).

I decided on a whim to buy it because it was cute, and cheaper than putting together a whole outfit by buying bits and pieces. I DO still have some time though, so I will ponder it some more.

When Potatoes Attack!

It seemed so innocuous at first. There I was last night, dutifully doing the many dishes that had piled up on my kitchen counter (though, deciding to do them at that moment was more a matter of obligation if I hoped to have a clean fork to use), some of which needed to be soaked in hot water to remove things stuck to the plates.

I let water run over the plates while I washed other things, and when I came to the plates, I found that they could probably soak a bit longer. But, being a bit impatient, I decided to just scrub with the sponge and then perhaps use my thumbnail a bit to remove the more stubborn bits of mashed potatoes that remained.

My thumb scraped across a tiny remnant, only it didn’t seem to budge. That is, until a piece shoved under my short thumbnail, and wedged between my nail and skin, like a giant potato splinter.

Ok, ow.

So I’m like, Oh My God, now what?! I turn off the water and put down the plate I was rinsing and ponder what to do. How do I get out a splinter made of potato? I imagine I can’t use tweezers like a wood splinter, because it’s too soft (although it was obviously hard enough in its current state), and probably a bit softer now that it had some more water running over it.

So I sorta press down on the nail right beneath the unwanted invader and, this is sort of gross, it kind of oozed out of my nail in a very unsplinter-like fashion. And immediately after it came out, the injury site bled some, which freaked me out a bit, though I rationalized that it probably means that there was no potato left inside to block the flow! So I suppose that’s a good thing.

It only bled for a second though, and then I was just left with a throbbing thumb, which turned into a headache awhile later (probably from the adrenalin of omg, what do I do?!), but just to show you how hard-core I am, I finished washing and drying the dishes within minutes of it happening.

It doesn’t really hurt today, unless I pretty on the area. I cleaned it as best I could, but hey, at least those potatoes were probably sterilized from the hot water and anti-bacterial dish soap. Though, if you suddenly see me with only 9 fingers, you’ll know why.

E-Bar

Last night I met up with Jennifer, the girl who has been my downtown companion. We met up for Happy Hour at Elephant Bar, and sat down at a table in the bar area to talk. We decided to order food as well as drinks, although she took awhile to figure out what she wanted (which I think may have annoyed our waitress. She wasn’t the best waitress I’ve ever had and was probably secretly cursing us, despite the fact that we DID order alcohol.)

We each only had one drink, since by the time everything came to us, Happy Hour was over. But also, she had to go home and pack, since she’s going out of town this weekend.

So, we mostly just talked a lot. I found out what she’s going to be for Halloween, and, because I can’t think of what to be, I think I might pick a companion costume to hers. It wouldn’t be that hard to find the required elements if I shop somewhere like Hot Topic, so we shall see.

I’m glad it’s Friday, but now I have to get back to work, because I have a site to launch by the end of the day.

Halloween Costume

Well, for the first time since, like, 2001, it looks like I might have Halloween plans. Of course, I refuse to say this firmly, since the holiday is still 4 weeks away. Anything could happen in that time. BUT, the important thing is that for the moment, I have plans to go downtown and party on Halloween, which I haven’t ever done before.

Now, the question is, what should I dress up as? The girl I’m going with says she already knows what she will be (though she hasn’t told me yet what this is), and that it will be hot. So, I can’t look totally unhot—that wouldn’t be cool (ha ha, pun intended!). If anyone has any suggestions for cool things I can be, let me know!

Double Booked

I found out that last night, I double booked some plans.

I was supposed to hang out with Marika and possibly take some pictures and stuff. But, she couldn’t find her battery charger, and it turned out to be raining anyway, which made pictures out of the question. Instead, she asked me to see a movie later that night, and I said yes.

At a litlte before 7pm, she called to make sure I was ready and that she’d come pick me up, and I said OK. Maybe a minute after I hung up, my phone’s alarm goes off. I’m thinking, why is the alarm going off?!

I look at the phone and see that it is alerting me to a reminder I set 3 weeks ago, telling me that the Book Club meeting was in half an hour, at 7:30pm.

Doh.

I had JUST reconfirmed the movie, so there was no way I was going to call back and be like “umm, yea, sorry I’m ditching you.” Plus, I like Marika, she reminds me of other people I know and like. So, I ditched the book club, sending an email today saying how I thought the meeting was on Monday (which is mostly true. I DID think it was on Monday, which is when it was last time. Thinking it was on Monday, I said yes to the movie without checking to see if it conflicted.). I just left out the part about how I did something else instead.

I am a little bummed, since I DID race to finish the book in time and was curious to hear some thoughts on a few plot points. But, oh well. I will go to the next one, having just picked up a copy of the next book.

What are the odds that I have multiple engagements going on at the same time?!
