Random Pondering
I’ve wondered this in the past, but I forgot to blog about it. Since it just entered my mind again, I figured I’d post it.
Assuming you don’t work from home, does your office provide a shower?
Steve mentioned to me before that his company’s bathroom is quite nice, and contains a nice shower. I was amazed by this, assuming that no other offices offer this amenity. I mean, the University Library certainly didn’t! I suppose this could be because it was a facility frequently accessed by the general public—if they offered showers, all kinds of weirdos might start hanging around in there. Although, they did offer a staff room, which, if it contained its own bathroom, could’ve included a shower.
So then I switch jobs and assume that my new employer is also sans-shower. I see a bunch of stalls, and what looks like one of those large handicapped stalls. I tell Steve he doesn’t know what he’s talking about and that office showers are NOT common. I mean, I’m 2 for 2, so wouldn’t that stand to reason that my experiences are indicative of the corporate world at large?? It doesn’t help though that Steve is also 2 for 2, but on the opposite side.
Anyway, I decided to peek into the handicapped stall the other day and discover….a shower!! So I guess I’m wrong and company showers do exist. It is no longer a mythical tale, like that of Santa or the Easter Bunny, but a real, tangible item.
So I ask you, do you think office showers are common? Does yours have one? Has anyone actually USED their shower? And why/why not?

They’re fairly common, especially in businesses where there are executives on premesis. The showers are there for people who work long hours and may have to sleep in the office, or for those individuals who use their lunch break to go running or play racquetball, but then have to come back for a meeting or something.
Ericsson, when I was there, had a few showers. It’s not rare, in the coporate world. It is rare in government work, since those jobs are strictly regulated in hours and stuff like that. It’s also rare in libraries, since those aren’t usually highly trafficked or staffed late.

Or are there long shower lines and it’s quicker to just do it in office? On the good side, a gym is right across the street from us, meaning if you did want to shower, you don’t have to be sweaty for too long.
Hehe and I don’t know if anyone sleeps here. Unless there is someone who commutes from Ventura and doesn’t wanna get up super early the next morning.
Why does no one tell you about work-place showers??
2 | Posted by: JenniferWe have showers in the 3 buildings I have worked in. Not on every floor but every 4th or so.
Good for the people that ride or run into work.
You have people that RUN into work?!? I’m guessing they don’t live too far away. :)
Hehe well, I only live 10 miles away, but as I can barely run a half mile, I don’t think I’ll be running to work any time soon.
4 | Posted by: JenniferYes, yes it does. My workplace is a beachouse in Ventura and the owner/my boss runs her graphic design studio out of it. It has an outdoor (though still private) shower in the back. Handy for fatasses like me who bike off the extra pounds when going to work, or for one of my coworkers who jogs on her lunch break.
It’s damn cold in the A.M., though.
5 | Posted by: Keir on February 03, 2005 @ 10:38 PMwe have one shower (for about 100 people), but due to mismanagement by the builders, it does not have a working drain and somehow the warm water has not been connected either.
of course, since I only live a 10-min bike ride away from work, I don’t need that shower ;)
6 | Posted by: Leonieke on February 04, 2005 @ 11:07 AMYea we have about 100 or so people in our office too, but I suspect there must be one in the men’s restroom, so I’d say we have 2.
That’s horrible about your shower though—it’s like they are taunting you! Although, I guess you COULD use it, you’d just flood the building and freeze from a cold shower. :)
