I Survived!
I made it through my first day of work in one piece—woohoo! Like most new jobs, it looks like there are a zillion things I’m expected to know—I’m sure it won’t be bad once I learn it all. I mean, my last job had a zillion duties if you broke it down, but it didn’t seem like I did much.
I just learned some basic things today, and of course signed a bunch of forms, one of which I’m almost positive said that I promised to sacrifice my first unborn child to them. I did read a few sad things when the HR woman went over the policies—the first was the part that said “No downloading things onto your computer that aren’t work-related”, and the second said “No instant messaging”.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
So….are there any people out there whose companies have similar policies? Do you adhere to these rules, or do you flaunt them? Will I be able to survive??
Oh, but lest you think that those rules totally bring me down, there is still email. Oh, and I almost forgot the best part!!
I GET BUSINESS CARDS!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel so important getting my own business cards—not fake ones like some people make on their ink jets just to get a free lunch, but REAL cards! I don’t know when i get them though—my boss said that they do them in batches once they have enough orders, so it will all depend on when they have enough to warrant fulfilling the order. Hopefully soon though.
I’m going to give them out to everyone I know—they will be collector’s items, you know. :)

Here at work we have a very light policy.
You can download whatever you want (yes even the nasty free screensavers), phone whenever you want (and with everyone you want), there are co-workers who actually spend time using instant messaging all the time, etc..
I’m accountant/IT manager but I’m not allowed to make a policy for it that it’s not allowed. That makes that I often have to clean computers off. It’s often working against an unseen force.
BUT… I have my own business cards aswell ;) Wanna trade? :P
Tho.. I got so many that I’ll never get rid of them all. *G*.
oooo neat Jennifer!
if all goes well, I’ll get my own business cards too (the real deal) — perhaps we can swap them?! ;)
I should start this week, but it isn’t clear yet when/where/how/etc ;) patiently waiting!

5 | Posted by: Ivette01 on August 17, 2004 @ 2:21 PMwell, my company actually provides and instant message client, internal with gateways to MSN Yahoo and AOL.
But my manager will not spend the money on business cards. go figure.
6 | Posted by: Splinter on August 19, 2004 @ 3:23 AMWe have just internal mailings. The bad point is that you at time rather use an internal message instead of talking to your collegue who is sitting right beside you. *grin*
