Bookworm

Well, it’s only taken me about 3 years to pick up reading again. It’s not that I dislike it, mind you, but rather that I got a bit burnt out on it. Being an English major does that to you, I suppose—especially when each class has about 6 books assigned to it.

I already finished Bridget Jones’s Diary, and am now starting on the sequel. I even finally signed up for a library card at the local public library! Currently I have been checking books out of the University Library, but the public libraries are a little better for general fiction—the University tends to only have classic literature or extremely popular titles.

Anyone have any book suggestions? I was also thinking about trying the Harry Potter series as well as the Da Vinci code (just to see what the hype is all about with these). Let me know if you read any really good books lately! :)

Crazy southern family memoir: Mary Karr’s Liars Club (sequel not so good)

Retelling of Wizard of Oz from POV of Wicked Witch, one of the most original things I’ve read and a real page turner: Gregory Maguire’s Wicked

Phillip Pullman’s The Golden Compass (first & best of the Dark Materials trilogy, other two are good but not quite as) beats Harry Potter hands-down

Neal Stephenson’s Diamond Age, which is basically a girls kick some ass near-future novel

Definatley recomend Harry Potter, some of the most enjoyable books I’ve read, as is Phillip Pullmans “His Dark Materials” Trilogy, just finished the first and working on the second at the moment.

A must read is The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.

I could go on about The No’1 Laidies Detective Agency books, but I’ll let Ivette tell you about them… :D

Yeah, Diamond Age, as well as anything by Stephenson, rocks. ;) Ending is a bit iffy though, but its a good read. Though it is a bit cyberpunk, which I know you’re not crazy about…

DaVinci Code, if you don’t think its going to be interesting based on summaries, you won’t like it. It’s not all its cracked up to be.

You might really enjoy Stardust by Neil Gaiman.

Harry Potter is great, but try not to read all books in one go. They get annoying.

Philip Pullman, Dark Materials, as Gwen commented, only book 1; it’s the best.

Dan Brown’s other books are more interesting than DaVinci Code - I’d recommend Angels & Demons.

And .. if you want to go for romance *G* nothing beats Nora Roberts!

Angels&Demons was a better story and more exciting than DaVinci Code, but poorly researched and far more historically inaccurate.

Yea, I liked Angels and Demons too! I also recommend anything by Kundera, esp _The Unbearable Lightness of Being_ or _Immortality_. The former is more readible, but the latter more poignant. A fantastic classic is _The Good Soldier_ by Ford Maddox Ford. The dude has the same first and last name… Nuff Said :) To finish off with my non-fiction recommendation: The Red Queen by Ridley is FASCINATING.

The Red Queen was full of crap.
