Spark of Nostalgia
Ahh, memories. This time of year, many things around town can cause one to reminisce, from the overcrowded bar scene as seniors celebrate their graduation after 4, 5, or even 6 years, to the students changing residence at the close of another school year. The past two days I have had to park my car closer to the freshman dorms, since the usually available parking spaces right next to my office have for some reason been full at an earlier time. As I walked to my car after work yesterday afternoon, I was struck by the scene of dads loading computers and other heavy items into the family minivan, while mom and daughter pack up the linens.
It’s been 2 years since anyone has helped me pack or unpack my belongings, and the last time I moved I did it all on my own. I did have my parents to help me during all 4 years of college though, so that was definitely a plus. Even though I am much more independent than I was back then (at least financially!), I still felt a wave of nostalgia watching kids packing up their lives from their first year of college. I don’t wish I was a freshman again, but I guess I am a bit envious of the carefree time that the simple act of moving out of the dorms represents.

I remember thinking to myself at the end of every college year that I was one year closer to getting my dream job and being totally on my own. Although I would not want to be a freshman again either, I would give anything to go back in time for a day and tell myself to enjoy that life before it is to late. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life, but oh what I would give to be soo carefree again, even if just for a minute.

I don’t think I took enough advantage of the freedoms I had, but I did get to experience things I wouldn’t have otherwise had I not gone to college. I think I miss most the ability to sleep in until noon, stay up until 3 am, and do whatever I wanted during the day—even mid-day naps! :) Now I go to bed early, and get up even earlier!!
