FREEZE! You’re under (house) arrest!

Ever have one of those really bizarre days? Today seemed like it would be like any other until I got an email from my mom at work with the subject heading “Heh”. The entire contents were as follows:

Hi,

I hear through a rumor that you are under house arrest. Comments?

WTF?!? The most criminal thing I’ve done is received a speeding ticket, and I have certainly never been arrested. When I first read it, I had a thought that maybe she meant to send that note to my sister, since she is the more wild one, but that was not the case. It seems she heard from an old neighbor who heard from another woman who heard from another woman who heard from who knows where. Of course the woman who told my mom was unable to provide details such as what my crime was, where I was under arrest, and how long the sentence was. All she knew was that my mom’s daughter, “the shy one” (aka ME), was under house arrest. Stupid gossipy ex-PTA parents. I guess now that their kids are grown they don’t have anything better to do than gossip and spread rumors.

Anyway this news kinda upset me, because I wasn’t sure if my mom believed it at all (though thankfully when I talked to her on the phone over lunch she was laughing about it). The most upsetting thing though is that my sister can do all sorts of bad things and no one knows—not even family, and here I lead a law-abiding life and get all these rumors spread. It’s also just so random—where did they come up with this??

The other really random thing though was last night I watched a movie called Cherish, which is about a girl who is under house arrest after killing a cop. Pretty entertaining movie, even though you have to be pretty forgiving about some of the logistics. Anyway, I told a few friends that I had seen this movie, and the next day there are rumors I’m under house arrest! Coincidence?? Probably, but it’s still a bit eerie nonetheless.

Bringing Down the House

Tonight I saw a sneak preview of Bringing Down the House. The theater had quite an interesting demographic. All different ages and ethnicities crowded the Fiesta 5 to partake in this film experience. There was quite a large number of older couples (middle aged and much older) as well as the normal college crowd. For some reason I guess I didn’t expect older people to be there. I am not sure what they came to see—Steve Martin or a film about old white people who try to be hip. Maybe these people think that by watching this movie, they too can be “hip” and “with it”. Rich old people are a strange lot. :)

I Love Tax Time

I’m stoked. End of last month I e-filed my tax returns using Turbo Tax for the Web and selected direct deposit. I got quite a bit of money back from the State, and even more from the Federal Government. I was pleasantly surprised to find my refund from the State in my checking account about 5 days later. The Federal refund came last Friday—yippee!! Pretty sweet; I highly recommend doing things electronically, it’s much faster.

Blech I think I’m coming down with another cold. I think a certain annoying coworker gave it to me. Lucky me. :(

Out and About

OK, I think it’s time for an update that’s not some sort of consumer action rant. On Wednesday night I went bowling with Steve. It seems that he has taken a liking to bowling and is determined to become good at it. We got a lane for an hour, in which time we managed to bowl 4 games.

My scores still aren’t GREAT, but I managed to break 100 every time—I got a 102, 110, 113, and 122. Steve did pretty well some games, but one he got an 88, heehee. It was fun, especially since there were only 2 of us and we got to just bowl really fast. It was pretty weird because there was almost no one there that night—I guess because it wasn’t a weekend. I saw my coworker Janice’s fiancee there because he is in the league and that is his night to bowl. He came over and asked if I was practicing for the next time the coworkers go bowling. I said yes. :)

Last night I went to the sneak preview of Old School. The movie wasn’t that great—-it had some amusing moments, but overall was probably made more for the teenage male crowd. In fact there were a bunch of teenage males in attendance and they seemed amused. Mostly though, I lament the fact that Vince Vaughn is looking kinda old. I guess it’s not the end of the world, since Swingers was probably the pinnacle of his career anyway—I can just watch that again.

Speaking of Vince Vaughn, I’ve heard of two sightings of him. One of Steve’s friends saw Vince directing traffic at a party in LA. I think he was a guest of the party, but was really drunk and decided it would be a good idea to direct traffic. The friends were crossing the street at the time when they saw him, and were like “Hey Vince, what’s up?” Vince was just really happy that anyone recognized him anymore—apparently a lot of the notoriety has died down. This could also be attributed to the fact that he’s gained a little weight.

The second sighting of him was in Vegas. At the blackjack table I was sitting at, a guy there mentioned he saw Vaughn at the tables in Hard Rock Hotel. Apparently he was drunk and pretty belligerent. It seems that the more belligerent he got, the nicer the staff was to him. I guess it was pretty funny to watch, because at one point he just started throwing chips at the dealer. I’m still waiting until I have a cool star sighting.
